Website usability review
If your website is okay but you know there’s room for improvement, we can take a comprehensive peek and recommend changes. Sometimes a time-consuming rebuild isn’t necessary, sometimes it is. Either way, you’ll get an unvarnished opinion.
Dead ends and dark patterns
You know everything that’s right with your site, but your customers know everything that’s wrong. The broken links, popups, and trapdoors you’ve learned to overlook quickly become their headaches and frustrations.
After our website usability review, you’ll know exactly how your site’s usability and customer experience stacks up, you’ll have recommendations on short-term fixes you can implement right now, and you’ll get a roadmap for longer-term fixes that may require a more in-depth redesign.
What we do
Are you ready for a change, but don’t know where to start? We can help by implementing the following website usability review process:
01 Research
First, we’ll do a thorough technical assessment of your website. This process may also involve poking around into site ownership and registration details. If that makes you squeamish, please let us know before we start.
This stage typically includes:
- Review site technical details (domain, hosting, CDN, email, etc)
- Map the current site navigation structure
- Review internal links
- Review external links
- Review XML sitemap
- Examine how site is indexed by Google
- Check for broken links
- Check for backlinks
Note
Obviously, if you’d like us to review your website on such a granular level, we’ll need administrative access (user names and passwords) to all relevant systems and platforms.
02 Analysis
We’ll work with you to determine common tasks and scenarios your visitors have in mind when they visit your website.
Then we’ll use these tasks and scenarios — or “journeys” — to review your existing site and record every usability and customer experience issue we encounter.
Some of the tools and procedures we use in this evaluation include:
- Google Page Quality audit
- Google PageSpeed Insights audit
- Content examination
- WAVE Web Accessibility evaluation
- Media management evaluation
- Social media participation
03 Recommendations
Next, we’ll deliver a report detailing guidance and short-term fixes that can be implemented now, within the context of your website’s current design.
Additionally, we may highlight long-term issues that can be fixed with a more significant redesign (which we can help you with as well).
04 Implementation (optional)
If you’d like, we can work with you to implement the short-term fixes we recommend. Plus we can develop a proposal for a future redesign to address the deeper usability and customer experience issues. The cost of this phase will vary depending on the scope and length of the engagement.
FAQ
Q: What makes your usability reviews different?
No usability analysis is complete without detailed recommendations that you can use to improve your site immediately. That’s why we don’t just point out your site’s weaknesses — We deliver concrete solutions and then work with you to implement them.
Q: Can’t we just do this ourselves?
It’s often difficult for a small business to objectively analyze its own website. In addition to our extensive expertise, we bring a fresh set of eyes and the kind of unbiased viewpoint you just can’t get from your employees or friends.
Q: How are your reports delivered?
All reports are delivered as digital PDF documents. We’d be happy to review and discuss the documents with you over the phone.
Q: Can I see an example of a completed review?
Sorry, client reviews are confidential. But you can contact us and we’ll answer any questions you might have.
